Itinerary
Day 1: Rishikesh to Chopta

It is an 9-10 hours drive from Rishikesh to Chopta. Pick up point will be Rishikesh/Haridwar Railway station at 6.30 am.

The Base Camp: Chopta

Chopta, base camp for this trek, 2679 meters above sea level, is a small beautiful village. Wake up with cool healthy breeze and chirping of birds in Chopta. The morning view from Chopta is invigorating when the crimson rays of sun kiss the snow laden Himalayas. The Chopta region has many treks and trails cutting through jungles and grasslands. Chandrashilla, Tunganath and Deoriatal are the best known trekking routes in the Chopta region. Because of an abundance of birds, Chopta is becoming popular among birdwatchers. You must watch beautiful sunset from this village.

Road from Rishikesh to Chopta will take you through Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag and Ukhimath.

‘Pleasure is found first in anticipation, later in memory.’ This is going to be your quote for the day. A long drive till Chopta leaves you with lots of turns and twists to formulate your expectations and imagine the moments, anticipating what exactly this trek would feel like or look like. Popularly known as ‘Mini Switzerland’, reaching Chopta your anticipation of beauty rises. This town is simply accessible and located on the road joining Gopeshwar and Guptkashi.

Important to Note: You will have mobile connectivity in many parts of Chopta. Do not depend on the intermittent signal in the mountains. Please inform family members about limited phone connectivity.

Day 2: Chopta to Chandrashila via Tungnath; Drive to Sari
  • Altitude: 8,790 ft (2,679 m) to 12,083 ft (3,683 m)
  • Time & Distance: 4 hours, 8 km Trek; 1 hour, 22 km Drive
  • Nature of Slope: Moderate. Sharp ascent to Tungnath (2 km) followed by steep climb to Chandrashila for about 45 minutes. Descent on the same path takes around 90 minutes.
  • Water availability: None. Ensure you are well hydrated and carry 2 litres of water while starting from Chopta

Chopta also has a few private guest lodges. Board your jeeps from here for a drive to Sari.

Quote for the day is ‘You’re stronger than you know’. You’ve to trek for a whole lot of 8 km today. When you signed up for the trek, you knew this ain’t a vacation, a trek demands fitness from you and today is the day you feel it and see for yourself. Start your morning with the stunning views of sunrise from Tungnath and the Chandrashila peak. Tungnath is third of the Panch Kedars and boasts of being the only temple in the world to be located at such a high altitude (12,073 ft). Reaching the Chandrashila top, a wholesome view of the Kumaon and Garhwal peaks greets you which includes Nanda Devi, Trishul, Nandaghunti, Kamet, Dunagiri, Chaukhamba, Kedar dome, Thalaysagar, Gangotri ranges and others.

Day 3: Sari to Deoriatal and back; Drive for Rishikesh
  • Altitude: 6,601 ft (2012 m) to 7,841 ft (2,390 m)
  • Time & Distance: 1 hour, 3 km
  • Nature of Slope: Easy. Gradual climb on a well-defined rocky trail, which becomes steeper after the first 10 minutes. Short descent to the camp site after an hour of climbing.
  • Water availability: None. Carry around 1 litre of water from Sari.

Sari also has a few private guest lodges. Board your jeeps from here for a drive back to Rishikesh.

Today, you resonate with ‘It does not matter how slowly you go, until you don’t stop’. You had a big day yesterday and though you are motivated in and out to head out for Deoriatal, your body tries to limit you. This is your chance of braving your limits and overpowering them. Go ahead, no matter what befalls, just do not stop. On the trail, you first come across at a place from where you might spot Chandrashila and Tungnath. Moving ahead, you delve into a trail of rhododendron and maple forests. Upon reaching Deoriatal lake, you see Mount Chaukhamba is sparkling at the expanse. Spend ample time here to absorb what Deoriatal reflects about you.

My favorite part was the bonfire dinner, when we played a game that involved relating our experience of the ongoing trek to life in general with certain wonderful tasks provided to us. Thank you tons GoGhumantu for creating that space.

GoGhumantu trek leader assigns specific duties to each participant which helps us value the feeling of responsibility and self expression. I’m really glad gratitude took over me due to these activities and I could feel the need of expressing my love for my family and loved ones
